An Ancient Faith, Reaching a New Generation, Lived in Holy Community
Who We Are
First, we are simply an orthodox sacramental and evangelical church. Our church name is: Emmaus Abbey Church [Pronounced E-may-Us = Emmaus] and we are affiliated with the International Communion Charismatic Episcopal Church (ICCEC) & Charismatic Episcopal Church of North America (CECNA).
People ask: “Are you Orthodox, Catholic or Protestant and we answer, yes! Mainly, we are a group of believers seeking to be the “Ancient Future Church.” “An Ancient Faith church, Reaching a New Generation, Lived in Holy Community” teaching the truths of Jesus Christ.
This church is not for the light hearted or folks looking for the next gig in town. We have many who are church hoppers (hop, hop) meaning they stay at a church a few Sundays then they leave and do the same again at another church down the street. And no, we will not change our service to be like other churches in the city. We love where God has brought us thus far and intend on maintaining our course in the “Ancient Future Faith as a church.
Some people are coming to Emmaus Abbey to rediscover the Faith once delivered [St Lerins]. Emmaus Abbey is an Ancient Faith Future Church, drawing on classical Christianity, convergence worship and spirituality to engage and change the culture in the 21st Century. We believe the pathway to the future runs through the roots of the past. We are not a postmodern church as we have enough of those here in Knoxville already. What you get today in our area churches are a real gig…Grab a banjo, ear-plugs, stage lights, skits and gimmicks, yes you can have the time of your life at these churches if you are looking for a post modern church. Bless their hearts, their on every corner city wide. We are not judging anyone wanting to be entertained, just stating we are not that kind of church. We do not entertain you, but ask you to join into God’s story through worship and prayer. We believe the pathway to the future runs through the past and these are the elements of worship the early church used to engage God. We pray that those seeking an authentic relationship with Christ will join us.
We have people from all walks of life and ethnic groups who worship with us: such as; Baptists, Methodists, Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Presbyterians, Lutherans and other Christians seeking a fuller communion with Christ. We believe God will send those wishing to re-connect to the early church and its teachings. We are a vibrant and diverse body of Christ who loves to sing and worship in the Word of a God. We are a direct representation of the historic New Testament church and orthodox in all our teaching. We have incorporated the fullness of the New Testament church in all its teachings and catholic expressions called:
“Three Streams” –Spirit, Word and Sacrament.
Second, I have to clarify the word Episcopal which in the Greek means ” epískopos” an ‘overseer’ a Bishop which is a senior pastor who oversees an area of churches and local priests. There are no “Lone-Rangers” in the local church. Ephes 4:11; 1 Tim 3:1-16. Church means a local body of regenerate, confessional, baptized believers who faithfully attend and support the church financially. These are what the bible calls believers. Hebrews 6:1-2. So, who are we? We are counter-cultural Christians tired of the culture trying to dictate who God is to our children and families. We profess to be Christians faithful to the Word of God!
- Come and encounter the living God who leads, restores, heals, and transforms our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit-Ephesians 2:8-9.
- Come and experience welcoming hospitality and community as you walk through the doors.
- Come and hear Scripture both read and preached. Come and participate in holy communion. Come and behold the Spirit work in and through us. Come and see.
Emmaus Abbey is a Christ centered, Bible teaching, Spirit filled liturgical church. We believe God reveals his love and draws us to worship Him through the Scriptures, the Sacraments and the Spirit, the three streams of a life giving church. When folks attend our church they identify us as Anglican, and this can be true since we use a prayer book to facilitate worship and we have many similarities. Yet, we are not a part of the Anglican communion.
Here you can expect a rich, authentic worship experience and a thoughtful liturgy offering a connection to an ancient faith. We cherish the confidence that comes from historical connectedness, from theology that is not tied to the whims of contemporary culture but to apostolic-era understandings of Christian faith and practice.
Upholding the Biblical and historic essentials of the Christian faith, all of the teaching, preaching and worship seek to offer a vibrant, living relationship with Jesus Christ.
We rely on the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and empower our worship and work, believing that He operates today as He has throughout history.
We believe the Christian life is lived out in true community. We invite you to join us. Our prayer is that in our worshipping community you will encounter the living God who through the Holy Spirit leads, restores, heals and transforms our lives.
Our name Emmaus pronounced “E-May-Us” comes from Luke 24:13-35, which says; Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
